Back to High School

People in their late early thirties associate Melbourne band Bodyjar with those fun high school  years, when they gain international recognition while they were touring with Pennywise (touring in Australia soon too!) and Blink 182 (headliners of Soundwave 2013)

Tokyo Zoobombs

Shy and humble, the band threw a show at the Tote that will be remembered for a while. It was six years since the last time they came to Australia and hopefully it won´t take that long to see them again next time.

Festival season

After a cold and slow winter, the festival season and the good weather are pretty much around the corner and some of my favourite bands will be in town.

These are my picks for the following few months, in case you need a little bit of help. Click on the link to go to the official site.

Melbourne Festival. 11-27 October. This is probably one of the most interesting ones if you have already left your mid-twenties behind. Shellac (fancy Fugazi?), Anthony and the Johnsons and Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth).

I’ll Be Your Mirror Melbourne 16-17 February. Small festival that claims to go against the grain of larger commercial festivals, with better sound and good organisation. This would definitely be one of my picks. My bloody Valentine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the Drones.

Meredith. 7-9 December. Primal Scream, Spiritualized and iconic Australian  band Regurgitator. 

If you miss this one, Golden Plains takes place at the same spot in March 2013

Falls Festival. 28 December. Don’t miss the Hives, Django Django, Maximo Park and the Flaming Lips (remember my photo of the fella in the bubble? Yes, that one!)

Harvest. 11 November 2012. Beirut, Beck and your only chance to see Sigur Ros this year in VIC. Sold out, but there is a second date announced.

Big Day Out. 26 January, right after a good Christmas meal. I would probably skip the headliners and see Yeah yeah yeahs, Against me and Band of Horses. Foals and Vampire Weekend will probably be wicked too.

Soundwave. 1 March. A lot of distorted guitars in this one, but heaps of fun bands amongst the line-up, Motion City Soundtrack, Blink 182, A perfect Circle (!) and  Stone Sour (Slipknot). I would probably save myself for the sideshows.

Laneway Festival. Sunday 3 February 2013. Bat for Lashes, Nicolas Jaar and Kings of Convenience, together with a bunch of good young Australian artists such as Chet Faker, Alpine, Pond and The Rubens.

Mesa Cosa

Friday night was rainy and my lenses were freezing when I got to the Tote. The sweaty crowd was dancing like crazy to Mesa Cosa -a Mexican influenced Australian punk rock band- before the Zoobombs -a brilliant Japanese band from Tokyo- hit the stage.

Internet surfing

Great news!

I was surprised to see that visits went up to 40 last night. The reason may be that Liveinphotos is featuring in Ilovephotoblogs, a project that has been running since 2008 and that claims over 30k (!) visitors every month. Rick, the publisher, is constantly looking for new photography blogs from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, USA. Thanks, mate!

Best of - Part II

Ready just before the weekend!

Same as before, click in the band name to check their music and get the feel.

The Vines – a hush-hush show in Sydney that was okay until Craig Nicholls smashed a guitar on the stage at the end.

Okkervil River – They got me when they played a cover of “Sloop John B” by the Beach Boys.

Bon Iver – Nice performance at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The guy got the Grammy Award in 2012.

Alpine – some local Melbournians that will be playing again in Melbs in September.

Matt Keegan Trio experimental saxo jazz. Good memories from my days in Sydney (they played at the Opera House!).

Ghoul – I had the chance to see them twice and document a practice session. The band is now gone, but the rumour is that there´s a new project coming soon.

Peaches – A bit older than last year, but the performance was really peculiar and the photos were good.

Electrelane – A feminist  indie rock band from Britain, performing at the Corner Hotel. The music was good, though.

Blitzen Trapper- The band from Oregon was quite fun live and loved the lead guitar sound. I cannot stand the album, though.

Die Antwoord – Not my style but they guys seem to be doing great and they are playing in all the main festivals.

Let´s get started, 3, 2 ,1… L-I-P - Best of last year´s - Part I

The Flaming Lips. One of my favourites shows last year. It is just amazing seeing Wayne Coyne crowdsurfing in a bubble .

Beirut, the gypsy indie folk sound from New york. As their “bio” states: a trumpet from Paris, farfisa organ, accordion, piano, ukelele, mandolin, glockenspiel, violin, cello, tambourine, the air powered organ I bought on twelfth street and  a Congo drum donated from the neighbours...

Battles, just an amazing performance that I could watch again and again. If you want to listen further, you should check this video of his take-away show in Wall Street.

Le Butcherettes: Mexican garage punk from Guadalajara, opening for Omar Rodriguez Lopez. They were literally climbing up the stage curtain at the East Brunswick Club.

The Wedding Present, simple fast old-school indie rock from Britain. 

Lou Barlow, from Dinosaur Jr. Pretty intimate show where he showed us his funny side and gave us a little bit too much information while he was sipping scotch.

Girl Talk – That is just a -insane- P-A-R-T-Y. I am not too sure why he hasn´t been sued for copyright infringement yet, neither the NY Times magazine does.

Aphex Twin. Just come to daddy, would ya? Also, for nostalgics, check this video.
